Southwestern opens 2016 SCAC Softball Championship Friday

GEORGETOWN, Texas – In less than 24 hours the Pirates will begin play in the 2016 SCAC Championship in San Antonio, Texas.

Southwestern has reached the post season tournament every season since the program's inception in 2009 and has claimed the SCAC title twice (2010, 2013).

Friday, the Pirates face Centenary College as the number four seed in the first round with first-pitch scheduled for noon.

The two teams met earlier in the season with Southwestern taking three-of-four in the series. SU averaged just over seven runs in the three wins and will again be a key to success in the post season.

Offensively, the Pirates are led by sophomore Taylor Curtis. Curtis is hitting .372 on the season and is followed closely by Marissa Irvin (.361). The duo is 12th and 13th in the conference in batting average.

Southwestern's pitching staff of Chandler Smith and Isabella Robb will have their hands full with Centenary's top hitters Gillet and Tasin. Both rank in the top five in the conference in batting average with Gillet at .425 and Tasin posting a .409 batting average on the season.

The winner of the game will advance to face #1 seed Texas Lutheran University at 4 pm Friday while the loser will drop into the consolation bracket and face the loser of the #3/#6 seed on Saturday at 10 am.
