FOUR PIRATES EARN SCAC ALL-TOURNAMENT SOFTBALL TEAM HONORS

CONWAY, Ark. – Led by senior third baseman Katelyn Gola who was an unanimous selection, Southwestern University landed four players on the 2010 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team. Joining Gola on the squad is pitcher Lyndsy Maus, first base Haley Hughes and second base Aly Pulver. The Pirates were named the 2010 SCAC Champions after defeating Millsaps twice on Championship Sunday.

Gola was an unanimous selection to the 2010 SCAC all-tournament squad – one of only two student-athletes to appear on all six ballots. In the two championship elimination games, she scored two runs including the tying run in the bottom of the seventh in game one and added an RBI.

Gola led the Pirates over the weekend – hitting .400 while going 10-for-25 from the plate with six runs scored and driving in five others. A Taylor, Texas native, she finished the tournament with a .440 slugging percentage, two stolen bases and 19 assists from her defensive position at third. The senior, who was named to her second straight all-tournament team, led all players this weekend in hits (10), runs scored (6) and was second in RBIs (5).

Pulver, a sophomore second-baseman from Cedar Park, Texas, went 9-22 from the plate for a .409 batting average during the tournament. In addition to her nine hits she drew five walks for a .533 on base percentage as well as scoring twice and driving in two runs. She went 2-4 in game one against Millsaps and started the Pirates off strong going 2-3 in SU's opening round game against Centre.

Hughes, a first-year first-baseman from Tomball, Texas, was 8-24 for a .333 batting average and had some of the biggest hits of the championship games. She had three doubles including the game winning two RBI double in the bottom of the seventh in game one against Millsaps, and then opened up game two with her only homerun of the tournament, a three run shot, to give the Pirates an early lead. Overall, Hughes recorded 10 RBI's, 16 total bases and five runs scored throughout the weekend.

Maus, a sophomore pitcher from Cypress, TX, was sensational on the mound. She recorded three wins over the weekend going 3-1. In 26.2 innings of work she had just nine earned runs and a 2.36 ERA with 21 strike outs and held opponents to just .260 from the plate.

The Pirates are awaiting word on May 10th on where and who they will play in the NCAA Regionals on May 13th. The SCAC Championship is the first for Southwestern in softball in just their second year of existence.
