Panetta Converts PK, Pirates Lose 2-1

GEORGETOWN, TexasCarr Panetta's first half penalty kick conversion gave the Souhwestern University men's soccer a 1-0 lead, but Colorado College used two quick second half goals to pull out the 2-1 victory.

Panetta stepped up to the spot after a Colorado College defender was called for an inadvertent handball inside the penalty area.

Panetta's goal was the fourth of the season for the 6-foot-4 junior forward from Austin, Texas, vaulting him into the team's leading goal scorer just one head of Michael Grimm.

Southwestern (5-5-2, 3-2-0 SCAC) was its 1-0 lead quickly evaporate in the second half thanks to a pair of Colorado College (6-2-3, 2-0-1 SCAC) goals in the first 5:33 of the period.

Kevin Peterson tied it at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at the 47:50 mark while Curtis Hale gave the Tigers the lead off an assist from Sajjan Singh at the 50:33 mark.

Southwestern's Jack Viles saved four of the six shots he faced while his competitor Jasper Broad got the win in relief of Colorado College starter Bowen Blair, who played just the first 17:38 of the match.

Broad saved six of the seven shots he faced including multiple in the final minutes despite the Pirates playing a man down after a Southwestern player was sent off due to a second yellow card of the match resulting in a red card.

Despite the loss, Southwestern remained in second place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference holding onto its nine points in the standings with three conference wins. Colorado College jumped into a tie for third with Texas Lutheran with seven points thanks to the win.

 

UP NEXT

Southwestern will now rest up to prepare for the aforementioned Texas Lutheran squad in a very important contest on Saturday, Sept. 22. Not only will it be a battle to stay in the top four in the SCAC, but it will also be Senior Day for the Pirates. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT.
