GEORGETOWN, Texas — Sophomore forward Mofe Ariyo scored the golden goal in overtime to deliver Southwestern men's soccer a 1-0 victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders.
Southwestern generated plenty of opportunities throughout the game, taking a season-high 28 shots and a 12-2 edge in corner kicks. However, the Pirates struggled to finish those opportunities. Several sailed just wide or high, while a handful of others hit the post and crossbar. Dallas goalkeeper Jonathan Coxon was also solid in the net with nine saves in 95 minutes.
The Pirates were also called offsides six times, including five in the first half.
Southwestern showed its aggressiveness early in overtime, earning two corner kicks in the first three minutes. The Pirates finally scored the winning goal on a quick-hitter when Winston Hebert ran into a crowd of Dallas and Southwestern players just past midfield and emerged with the ball, sending a beautiful pass to Ariyo, who showed discipline and perfect timing in making his run.
Ariyo used his back to seal a Dallas defender and settle the ball in the box, faking a spin towards the middle to freeze the defenders before turning outside into open space to pull the Dallas keeper up and deliver a low shot to the right bottom corner off one bounce.
With the win, Southwestern improves to 9-2-4 with a 4-1-2 conference record. The Pirates will close out the regular season next Saturday on the road against Texas Lutheran University.
