KERRVILLE, Texas — For the second time in as many games, Southwestern men's soccer got a game-winning goal from a first-year forward, defeating the Schreiner Mountaineers 1-0 to improve to 2-0 this season.

A little more than 16 minutes into the match, Richard Maybury carried the ball into open space up the right sideline, getting to the final line of defense before meeting any opposition. With a quick hesitation-and-go, Maybury eluded a slide tackle and delivered a cross in perfect stride to Jackson DeHaven for the goal.

The goal was enough for the Pirate defense, which put together a second consecutive shutout performance. Southwestern pressed its advantage throughout the match, taking an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, including five in the first half. Southwestern formed a wall defensively in the second half, limiting Schreiner to just three shots and none on goal.

With the win, Southwestern picked up another three points in the standings, sitting atop the SCAC at 2-0 with six points. The Pirates won't play a match next week, with their contest against Trinity being postponed. Southwestern will host Colorado College on Saturday, Mar. 20, at noon.
