GEORGETOWN, Texas — Whether in the spring or fall, Southwestern men's soccer appears to feel most at home in overtime, battling the University of Texas at Dallas Comets to a 1-1 draw.
Texas-Dallas dictated the terms for much of the first half, working for a 5-1 advantage in shots and earning five corner kicks. A corner kick put the Comets on the board first, utilizing a short corner kick to draw the defense up, then sending a cross off the head of Kayson Marriott that was tracked down and scored on by Brandon Bohn a little more than 10 minutes in the game.
Southwestern goalkeeper Jack Viles made three big saves the rest of the first half, keeping the Pirates within striking distance.
Fernando Garduno-Jaramilo closed that gap a little more than 10 minutes into the second half. Southwestern caught Texas-Dallas off guard by eschewing its normal set pieces from the attacking-third sideline in favor of a quick throw-in to Jackson DeHaven, who found Garduno-Jaramilo open in front of the net on a cross to tie the game.
The contest turned into a chippy, physical game the rest of the way, with 10 yellow cards called between both teams through the second half and both overtimes. Southwestern created two opportunities over the final 30 seconds of the game, earning a long throw-in from the sideline and a corner kick, but both were turned away to preserve the draw.
Southwestern and Texas-Dallas each finished the game with identical 2-2-1 records. The Pirates will host Hardin-Simmons on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 7:00 p.m.
