GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University men's soccer team went into double overtime before ending the first game of the season tied with the Colorado College Tigers in an exciting match played Saturday afternoon on Varsity Field.
Within the first few minutes of the game, Colorado College attacked the Pirate's defense and took two shots at the Pirate goal. Fernando Garduno-Jaramilo blocked the first shot, but the Tigers did not back down. Halfway into the first half, Colorado College's Alexander Ward sent a swift pass to Noah Johnson, who scored the game's first goal, giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead. Southwestern took two more shots at the goal, but the Tigers held them off to end the half with the Pirates down one goal.
Going into the second half, Southwestern felt the urgency to try and score a goal, so the Pirates took every opportunity to keep the ball in their possession and to attack the Tiger goal. The Pirates fired five shots at Colorado's goalie and only allowed the Tigers to take one shot at the Pirate goal. With the clock winding down, it seemed the Tigers would take the win. With five minutes left, the Pirates set up for a corner kick that Nathaniel Blake took. Blake kicked the ball right in front of the Tiger goal, where Garrison Van Houten headed the ball at the box. Colorado's goalie lunged at the ball to block the shot attempt, but Theo Givens cut into Van Houten's header to kick the ball past the Tigers goalie and straight into the back of the net to tie the game before the end of the second half.
The Pirates and Tigers went into two overtimes to try and score a goal. However, both team's defense would hold each other to zero goals, ending the game in a tie.
Southwestern University men's soccer improves 2-0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play. The Pirates will take some time off next weekend but will come back to play Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, on Saturday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
