Southwestern Defeats Dallas in Double OT

Southwestern Defeats Dallas in Double OT

IRVING, Texas — Reigning SCAC Offensive Player of the Week Mofe Ariyo showed his flair for late-game theatrics, delivering a golden goal a minute into the second overtime of Southwestern's 2-1 victory over the Dallas Crusaders.

Southwestern struck early, scoring the first goal a little more than 15 minutes into the game. The Pirates created the opportunity on a free-kick off a foul by the Crusaders' Tomas DePetris. Skyler Frey delivered the kick to Scott Wilson, who headed the ball to Peyton Sullivan. Sullivan's shot was deflected off the post by the Dallas goalkeeper Goncalo Pernas. Nathaniel Blake collected the rebound and delivered the ball past the laid-out Dallas goalkeeper for Blake's second goal of the season.

The Pirates put three more shots on goal before the end of the first half but were denied by Pernas, including one off a corner kick.

Dallas tied the game five minutes into the second half on a quick-hitter off a counter-attack. The Pirates pressured with a long drop-kick from goalie Jack Viles, forcing Dallas midfielder Nate Riddle to clear the ball with a long kick out of Southwestern's attacking third.

Crusaders' forward Nat Kajiwara covered a lot of ground in pursuit of the kick, creating an opportunity through sheer hustle, knocking the ball free towards teammate Chase Reynolds, who capitalized on the one-on-one opportunity in the open field against Viles.

Dallas held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the second half with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Both defenses held firm the rest of the way, with each team getting one shot in the first overtime.

Southwestern generated a quick counterattack early in the second overtime after Dallas failed to put a head on their own throw-in from the sidelines. Fernando Garduno-Jaramilo showed great awareness, tracking down the loose ball and delivering a pass to Theo Givens, who led Ariyo into open space on the right side with a beautiful one-touch pass.

Ariyo timed his approach to the pass perfectly, delivering the game-winner off his right foot past the goalie's outstretched arms into the back left corner of the net.

With the win, Southwestern remains undefeated at 4-0-2. The Pirates will host the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m.
