GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern men's soccer flexed its defensive muscle again, recording its seventh shutout of the season to defeat the Schreiner Mountaineers 2-0.
The Pirates flew to the ball, shutting down opportunities before they could develop in holding the Mountaineers to three shots the entire game, including only one on goal.
Perhaps more impressive is how Southwestern converted good defense into offense. Late into the first half, midfielder Rodrigo Suarez Acuna perfectly anticipated Schreiner's Michael Gonzales's move, taking the ball and triggering a series of quick passes up the field. Acuna moved the ball to Jackson Gill, who found Caleb Allen in the middle of the field.
Allen passed it ahead to Jackson DeHaven on the left side. The latter's initial shot was blocked, but DeHaven maintained his composure, taking the rebound and finding Allen sprinting right down the middle of the field to the front of the net for the game's first score at the 37:38 mark.
Southwestern's already suffocating defense tightened in the second half, limiting Schreiner to just one shot. The Pirates put the game out of reach with an insurance goal off a corner kick with less than four minutes remaining.
Nathaniel Blake delivered the perfect ball from the corner to Carr Panetta, who got in front of his defender and headed the ball into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Southwestern improves to 6-1-3 this season, including 1-0-1 in conference play. The Pirate defense will be tested against a nationally-ranked opponent on Sunday when Southwestern hosts No. 2 Trinity at 2:30 p.m.
