Seven Men's Soccer Players Earn Conference Recognition

Seven Men's Soccer Players Earn Conference Recognition

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced its 2020-21 All-SCAC Men's Soccer Team with six Southwestern players earning all-conference recognition.

Senior Garrison Van Houten and the freshman trio of Reagan Fortner, Nathaniel Blake, and Jack Viles were named to the All-SCAC Second Team.

Van Houten, Fortner, and Viles helped anchor the SCAC's stingiest defense, posting five shutouts in the Pirates' unbeaten season. Van Houten earned his second consecutive All-SCAC Second Team award, leading a defensive backline that tied Trinity for the fewest shots allowed on goal in the conference. He also triggered the Southwestern set pieces on throw-ins.

Fortner was a revelation in his first season, playing nearly every minute on the defensive backline, disrupting opposing offenses and neutralizing threats before they happened. Viles led the conference with the fewest goals against (three) and goals-against average (0.39), recording 16 saves for a conference-best .842 save percentage.

Blake opened his collegiate career with the game-winning goal over Texas Lutheran University in the Pirates' season opener, earning the SCAC Player of the Week award for that week. Blake also assisted on the Pirates' game-tying goal to earn a draw against Trinity and scored a goal in the Pirates' 2-1 win over Dallas. He finished the season with five points.

Sophomore Fernando Garduno-Jaramilo and freshman Jackson DeHaven earned All-SCAC Honorable Mention, making it Garduno-Jaramilo's second consecutive All-SCAC Honorable Mention honor.

Fortner, DeHaven, and Blake also earned All-SCAC Men's Soccer Freshman Team honors, joined by teammate Skyler Frey

Southwestern finished its season with a 4-0-4 record, earning a bye in the SCAC Championship Tournament and ending the year with a 0-0 draw in the semifinals against Centenary, who advanced by winning the penalty kick shootout.
