Penalty Kicks Push Pirates Into Championship

Penalty Kicks Push Pirates Into Championship
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Two full frames and two overtimes were not enough to decide a winner as the Pirates won in penalty kicks to advance to the SCAC Championship game.

The first half was incredibly balanced. Southwestern had a slight advantage in shots 6-5 and took two corner kicks while allowing none to the Tigers.

Colorado turned up the heat and applied more pressure offensively, posting nine shots while Southwestern got off five. Neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities, however, as regulation came to a close.

The Pirates seemed to control the overtime frames but didn't get the bounce they needed as Colorado College's defense did just enough to keep SU off the scoreboard.

The momentum was in the Pirates favor as the second overtime ended, giving SU a leg up heading into the penalty kicks.

Southwestern made the first attempt, a successful one, by Forrest Baker. Baker placed the ball inside the right post and out of Marowitz's reach as he dove in the correct direction.

CC's Martinez looked to even the count, but his low drive slid outside the left post, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead to open.

Ryan Staten made it two for two with a shot in the dead center of goal while Marowitz dove to the right. The Tigers' Salazar kept Colorado College in the game with a successful penalty kick just inside the left post. Timothy Eamma kept the Pirates ahead with a confident shot to the right. Colorado's strongest offensive threat stepped to the ball next and Daniel Poole made a great save and pulled the ball off the goal like to put the Tigers even deeper in the hole.

Matthew Nickell had a chance to seal the win for the Pirates on his attempt and he did just that as he put the ball away to the left.

The 4-1 shootout win sends the Pirates into the Championship game for a rematch with Trinity. This is the third time this season the two teams have faced. TU won the first contest 2-0 and the second ended in a 2-2 tie. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
