Perkins Selected as SCAC Character & Community Recipient

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Evan Perkins, a senior from Keller, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending September 30, 2012.

Perkins, a captain on the men's soccer team, is one of just a handful of players in school history who immediately jumped into the starting line-up as a first-year student-athlete.

Perkins has progressed with his soccer skills since that freshman season; but most importantly he has transformed himself into a top leader and role model on the team. His innate ability to have other people follow his lead was never more apparent than in El Salvador in March, 2011.

In the words of Southwestern head men's soccer coach Don Gregory, "We took a group of soccer players to the Central American country for three international matches, and for four days of Community Outreach in the worst of the barrios in San Salvador. Evan wrote the lesson plans and instituted the practice session we ran at the University of Central America. He had the other Pirates player organized and energized to perform at a high level for the El Salvadoran children. It was fun to watch Evan shine in his role. Even this year, the 2012 first year players gravitate to him for his advice and friendship."

The men's team is currently 8-5 on the season and plays host to the #1 team in the nation, Trinity, on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
