Total Team Effort Leads to Pirate Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - It took a complete team effort for the Pirates to win on Tuesday night and that is just what they gave as SU defeated Concordia 2-1.

Concordia came out punching, aggressively pushing the ball into the box and tested Daniel Poole early in goal. The Pirates had a few breakaways of their own that were just off target, holding the game scoreless through the opening 20 minutes.

Southwestern got what they had been working for when Evan Javors made a great tackle on the near side of the field, taking the ball away from the Concordia defense to start the attack. Javors found Marco Alcocer 20 yards from goal in the middle of the field and passed over to Evan Perkins on the left of the goal. Perkins took two touches on the ball and gently placed it into the back of the net, just inside the right post to give SU a 1-0 lead.

The Tornados were just inches from tying the game as the clock ticked under a minute. Nathan Tjon-Joe-Pin's shot from four yards was saved by Poole who was able to get just enough of a hand on it to deflect away and Reza Askari attempted to put in the rebound on an off-balance shot, but was saved off the line by SU's defense.

Just as the cold front swept through the field in the second half the Tornados turned up the heat. A foul deep in Pirate territory resulted in a direct free kick, taken by Thomas Houlton. Houlton drilled a shot off the Southwestern wall of defenders and created just enough spin to land in the left netting, tying the game 1-1.

After a mass substitution to bring in fresh legs the Pirates pressed on and got back to back corner kicks with the second resulting in the game winner. Zach Faulker took the kick from the right corner and sailed a beautiful ball to the far post. His ball found Forrest Baker who headed it over to Ryan Staten in the dead center of the box who put it away to give SU a 2-1 lead in the 74th minute.

Southwestern held a slight advantage in shots 16-14 but had eight more corner kicks than the Tornados as the Pirate defense allowed none in the second half. Poole poste seven saves in the win while Kyle Duncan recorded five saves in goal for Concordia.

Now 8-5 on the season, the Pirates return to SCAC action to face #1 Trinity. The rivals square off on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Georgetown.
