Pirates Snag First Conference and Home Win

Pirates Snag First Conference and Home Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Two second half goals handed the Pirates their first SCAC conference and home win of the season as SU defeated the University of Dallas 2-1 on Sunday afternoon while controlling the entire match.

Southwestern came out blazing with shot after shot and had the first real threat to the Crusaders. Marco Alcocer's first shot, second of the day for the Pirates, careened off the upper left corner of the crossbar to hold the game scoreless.

Evan Perkins had another great look less than five minutes later as he gathered and drilled a shot at the goal, forcing the keeper to make a diving save to hold SU off the scoreboard.

Dallas' looks were few and far between as the Pirates defense held strong and made some great plays to take away the opportunities, but were the first on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute. UD showed all game their attack plan was going to be to play overtop of the SU defense and with a long goal kick the Crusaders made it a reality. Kerin punted the ball downfield to Mikhail Castillo who was able to find the back of the net, giving UD an early and unexpected 1-0 lead.

Now trailing, Southwestern continued to attack with vigor and had another stellar look with Timothy Eamma's one touch shot off a great pass from Steven Resnik that seemed to be the equalizer, but once again James Kerin made a great reaction save to punch the ball away from danger.

Southwestern's barrage of shots continued throughout the remainder of the half but couldn't get one to fall as they headed into the break trailing 1-0 despite dominating possession throughout the half.

Perkins needed just two minutes in the second half to even the count with a great pass into the box from Zach Faulkner. Perkins headed the ball into the upper ninety, out of reach of Kerinl to tie the game once again and handing the Pirates the momentum.

Eamma rebounded his own shot on a great save by Kerin to hand the Pirates the lead with 29 minutes to play in the game. Zach Faulkner played the ball into the box from the middle of the field and Perkins headed the ball over to Eamma. Eamma's one touch shot eight yards from goal was saved but he punched in his rebound for the game winner.

Southwestern controlled the tempo the rest of the way and were only threatened a couple of times in the final 15 minutes, but the Pirate defensive line was tough as always to close out the 2-1 win.

The Pirates dominated the shot count 19-6 and took 11 corners while allowing just two to the Crusaders. Poole recorded four saves in goal while Kerin posted six on the afternoon.

With the win Southwestern improves to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC. They return to the road to face Austin College on Friday in Sherman, Texas.
