Strong Second Half Leads To 3-1 Win over Tornados

GEORGETOWN, TX- 2023 Homecoming was kicked off with the Women's Soccer Team hosting the Concordia University Tornadoes.

The Tornados came into the match coming off a 2-2 tie with Trinity University and still looking for their first win of the season. The Pirates were looking to add to their 2-Game win streak.

Early in the match, the Pirates proved they would keep possession of the game. With seven corner kicks in the first half alone, they outshot the Tornados 10-3. The Pirates looked to be rushing their shots and they were struggling to get them on target. Junior Captain and current SCAC Player of the Week, Samantha Hazen, set up #25 first-year, Jackie Powell with a pass right in front of the goal. Powell missed the shot and Hazen came to her aid with some encouragement and a pat on the back. The Pirates needed to score desperately but continued to play with poise and work together.

After halftime, the Tornados came out and took control of the game, getting the match's first goal early on. The Pirates were on their heels and were struggling to get anything going offensively until Mia Reyna set up Milan Diaz with an opportunity to score and she was able to capitalize on it, bringing the score to 1-1. The intensity picked up from both teams, but ultimately the Pirate's Meredith Lannan put the ball in the back of the net on what would be the go-ahead goal. Just two minutes later, with six minutes to go, Mia Reyna passed the ball to Laren Gradt. Gradt took two touches from about 35 yards out and blasted it. The ball curved just above the goalkeeper's fingertips and just below the crossbar. The Pirates would win this 512 Battle, 3 to 1.
