Pirates Drop 2-1 Decision, Fall to Third in the SCAC

SEGUIN, Texas – Lilly Van Meter's tactical long-range shot in the 8th minute gave the Southwestern University women's soccer team a 1-0 lead, but Texas Lutheran University would eventually pull out a 2-1 victory.

Van Meter's goal was masterfully played by the sophomore from Kingwood, Texas, as she dribbled attempting to shed her defender along the right edge of the penalty area and unleashed a well-place ball to the upper left corner from about 80-feet away for the goal past TLU's Madison Johnson.

Southwestern (5-4-4, 5-2-1 SCAC) would see its lead be short-lived as Alyssa Simien put the Bulldogs on her back and would eventually carry them to victory.

Simien tied the game at 1-1 off a free kick in the 21st minute before giving the Bulldogs the lead exactly 3:55 of action later with another free kick. The first was from about 10-yards outside the penalty area semicircle while the second was nearly 7-yards from the far-left front corner of the penalty area.

Southwestern's Johnna Campbell would see just two more shots on goal the rest of the way with both being off the foot of Simien, but the damage had been done and the Pirates could not muster a tying goal the rest of the way.

TLU (6-6-1, 6-2-0 SCAC) jumped into second place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with the win. The Bulldogs now have 18 points (three for a win and one for a draw in conference) while Southwestern falls to third place with 16 points.

Southwestern outshot TLU 10-6 including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, but TLU's Johnson stopped five shots from the Pirates.
