Women's Soccer Falls To Trinity In Championship Match

Women's Soccer Falls To Trinity In Championship Match

IRVING, Texas — All season, the Southwestern women's soccer defense met top-tier opponents with a bend-don't-break effort, pulling out a string of clutch victories.

In the second meeting of the season between No. 22-ranked Southwestern and No. 24-ranked Trinity, the Tigers finally broke through and opened the floodgates in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) championship match, winning 5-0.

Conference-leading scorer Kaity Ward struck first, scoring off an assist from Kyra Stafford a little more than 26 minutes into the contest.

Like the first game, Southwestern managed to mitigate the damage despite being under siege the entire half, withstanding a 20-2 Trinity shot advantage while ceding just the one goal. Southwestern keeper Johnna Campbell was brilliant with eight saves in the half, keeping the Pirates within striking distance.

That's where the script changed from the regular-season contest, where Southwestern rallied to a 2-1 win. This time, Trinity stepped on the gas, scoring a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Ashlyn Zinglemann found Emma Everts at the 50:22 mark, followed by Everts assisting Mary Sheridan, the conference's second-leading scorer, for the 3-0 lead.

Trinity added two more goals in the final 10 minutes. Michaela Bosco scored an assisted goal from Madison Horner, and Taylor Campbell added a final goal with seconds remaining off a pass from Abby Schneider.

The Tigers ended with a 33-6 shot advantage with the Pirates only putting two on goal, having both stopped by Trinity keeper Lauren Bolish.

Southwestern suffered only its second defeat of the season, falling to 15-2-1, and first loss to a conference opponent. The Pirates, who entered the SCAC Tournament ranked No. 22 in the nation and No. 2 in Region X, will await their NCAA Tournament fate with the selection show airing Monday at noon
