Resilient Pirates defeat ‘Roos 3-2

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern netted two goals in the second half and kept the 'Roos scoreless to defeat Austin College 3-2 Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southwestern was quick to take control of the game as Kierstyn Luckock was left wide open in front of goal. Ana Gutierrez centered the ball inside the 18-yard box to Luckock who had no trouble putting it in the back of the net just five minutes into the contest.
  • Austin College was quick to respond just a few minutes later as Erin Eckart found Ashley Rice streaking towards goal.
  • The 'Roos took advantage of a free kick just outside the box with 12 minutes to play in the first half to take the lead. Hannah Poenisch placed the ball perfectly under the crossbar and into the back of the net, out of Kylie Hunt's reach to put AC up 2-1 in the first half.
  • Four minutes into the second half SU's Megan McGrath equaled the count with a lofting shot from 25 yards out that snuck under the crossbar, tying the game 2-2.
  • A perfect corner kick from Ana Gutierrez found Hayley Miesse on the far post who one-touched the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner in the 73rd minute.

UP NEXT

The Pirates improve to 5-7-1 on the year and 3-3 in the SCAC while Austin College falls to 2-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play. SU remains at home to face Centenary College (1-10, 0-7) Sunday at noon.
