Early Half Goals Lift Pirates to Win

Early Half Goals Lift Pirates to Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern opened each half with an early goal to set the tone and cruised to a 2-0 victory over Centenary College.

Southwestern wasted no time and scored less than five minutes into the game. Hannah Neil put away an attempted clear from 23 yards out that went just under the cross bar and over the outstretched arms of Brittaney Dunn in goal to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead.

Centenary had a few goal scoring opportunities stymied by the Pirate defense and Sarah Nonaka in goal and retained the 1-0 lead heading into the break.

As the second half got underway, SU picked up where they left off and turned up the heat. The Pirates got some padding as Allie Dillon came down the near sideline and found Paige Duggins open in front of the net. Duggins gathered the ball and spun to her left to take a shot that snuck just inside the right post to put Southwestern up 2-0.

The Pirates locked down defensively and kept the Ladies for getting a decent look at goal the remainder of the way and closed out the 2-0 with solid possession soccer.

Southwestern outshot Centenary 14-2 in the game but had two fewer corner kicks, 4-2. Southwestern's Nonaka posted two saves while Dunn recorded eight saves on the evening.

Now 4-8 on the year and 2-3 in the SCAC, the Pirates remain at home to face Austin College on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
