Winning Streak Continues for Pirates

Winning Streak Continues for Pirates

SHREVEPORT, La. - Southwestern recorded their third straight victory and shutout on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon, defeating Centenary College 3-0 to improve to 4-8 on the season and 2-2 in the SCAC.

The Pirates dominated the opening minutes, taking the first four shots of the game in the first six and a half minutes. Hannah Neil made all that work worthwhile with a soft floated from 15 yards out, left of the goal that Centenary's keeper was only able to get her fingertips on, putting SU up 1-0 17 minutes into the game.

Nine minutes later, Southwestern added a little cushion when Paige Duggins, assisted by Allie Dillon and Carol Bentley, tapped in the ball from five yards out. The Pirate defense took control and allowed just two shots the rest of the half, sending SU into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Centenary came out with a new game plan and kept Southwestern from getting the attacks they did in the first half, but also weren't able to get any good looks at goal. Lyndsey Resnik had one shot saved in the 49th minute and then things when quiet until Chelsea Letzer scored from 30 yards out, beating Brittaney Dunn in goal in the 85th minute to send SU to the 3-0 final.

Southwestern controlled the tempo throughout the game and took 11 more shots than the Ladies, 16-5. Sarah Nonaka was barely tested in goal thanks to the stingy SU defense, posting one save while Centenary's Dunn posted five saves.

The Pirates have the week off before starting the second round of SCAC action, facing Centenary on October 12th at home.
