#10 Cowgirls Too Much for Pirates in Season Opener

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin Simmons scored four first half goals en route to a 6-0 loss for Southwestern women's soccer in their season opener.

The Cowgirls came out strong, taking five shots in the first seven and a half minutes of the game and controlled every minute from the opening whistle, scoring their first goal in the 18th minute and followed with another just 40 seconds later.

HSU posted two more goals and the first half and kept the Pirates from getting a shot off, sending SU into halftime down 4-0.

As the second half got underway, Hardin-Simmons started in similar fashion and scored their fifth goal in the 53rd minute. In the 70th minute Southwestern began to find their points of attack and ripped off two shots that were just off the mark.

As the clock ticked down Southwestern upped the pressure and got two corner kicks in the 89th minute resulting in a shot by Lyndsey Resnik that veered just wide of the goal. On the transition, the Cowgirls recorded their sixth goal to arrive at the 6-0 final.

Hardin Simmons dominated the shot count 28-4 and took five more corner kicks than the Pirates, 7-2. Starting keeper Sarah Nonaka recorded 13 saves in 63 minutes of action while back-up Katherine Rodgers posted three saves in 27 minutes. Kylie O'Connor led the attack with two shots. Six different Cowgirls had one goal each while Devon Howard posted two assists in the win.

Southwestern falls to 0-1 on the year and have a quick turn-around as they face Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas on Saturday at 7pm.
