The Pirates Advance To The SCAC Finals

The Pirates Advance To The SCAC Finals

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS- For the third straight year, the Pirates matched up against the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in the SCAC Tournament in Houston, Texas at SaberCats Stadium.

The Pirates entered the tournament as the three seed, and the Bulldogs as the two seed for the 2023 Semifinal matchup. The Pirates played the Bulldogs in their preseason and ended their regular season versus Texas Lutheran, with both matches resulting in a loss.

Southwestern's Samantha Hazen led off the scoring, getting the Pirates on the board with her fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute. The goal was assisted by Alexis Salinas. The Pirates held onto the lead until halfway through the second half before the Bulldog's were able to get a header passed Johnna Campbell in goal. Momentum seemed to shift away from the Pirates before Freshman, Jackie Powell was able to score the game-winner with ten minutes to go. Jackie Powell has been gaining confidence and experience all year long and after scoring her first collegiate goal just games ago, she is now on a three-game streak for getting a goal.

Southwestern advances to the SCAC final for the sixth time in program history and second time in three years. The Pirates will match up against number one seed, Trinity University, at 11:00am CST at SaberCats Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday, November 5th, 2023.
