GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern women's soccer controlled its match against the Centenary Ladies from start to finish, winning 2-0 in a game that wasn't that close.

Southwestern struck early, scoring 12 minutes into the match on Yamila Lara's first collegiate goal. Senior defender Samiah Varnell created the opportunity, catching the Centenary backline pressing too far up and delivering a long, direct pass down the right sideline to Samantha Hazen

The pacey freshman forward overtook and created separation from two Centenary defenders, sending a cross to teammate Mia Summers

Centenary defender Gabby McDonald managed to break up the connection but sent the ball directly to the trailing Lara, who finished a well-placed left-footed half volley shot to the back right corner of the net.

The Centenary defense resolved to fortify its defense with renewed physicality, ramping up collisions starting with a yellow card by Daisy Acosta for a hard shoulder 25 minutes into the match.

That physicality cost them less than 10 minutes into the second half when a foul by Centenary defender Yosi Bouslog set up a free-kick from the left corner for a second Southwestern goal.

Southwestern's Lilly Van Meter triggered the play with a well-placed pass across to the right side of the six-yard box. Forward Juliet Pridgen tracked the ball off one bounce, delivering a leaping pass to the front of the net for an Abrianna Morales header into the back of the net.

The Pirates had other scoring opportunities cut short by offsides calls but finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Both team's keepers finished with two saves. Southwestern's Johnna Campbell completed the 10th shutout of her career.

Southwestern improves to 8-1 with the win. The Pirates will travel next weekend for a Sunday match against Austin College in the final non-conference game before conference play begins.
