GEORGETOWN, Texas — The second-seeded Southwestern women's soccer team opened the first round of the SCAC Championship Tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Austin College Kangaroos.

Southwestern opened the game with a shot on goal right off the opening kick, testing Austin College keeper Meredith Harris early and often with a 19-4 edge in shots taken, putting 12 on goal. The Pirates' aggressiveness manifested itself in an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

On Southwestern's fifth corner, the Pirates finally broke through with Samantha Davis finding the back of the next on Alexis Guajardo's kick for the game-winner a little more than 33 minutes into the game.

Harris did an admirable job for Austin College with 11 saves, stopping three shots each from Maya Fuller and Guajardo. On the other side, Southwestern goalkeeper Johnna Campbell faced few shots, saving three in her fifth career shutout victory, but was active in breaking up several other opportunities before the Kangaroos could generate a shot.

The defending SCAC Champion Southwestern Pirates advance to the semifinals for the third consecutive season and the eighth time in program history, earning the eighth shutout tournament victory in program history. Southwestern will face third-seeded next Friday on a neutral field at Texas Lutheran University.
