GEORGETOWN, Texas – Beautifully timed passes and stellar defense vaulted the Southwestern University women's soccer team to an easy 3-0 victory over visiting Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Pirates (5-3-4, 5-1-1 SCAC) sprinted past Texas Lutheran for sole possession of second place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after the Bulldogs lost by a similar 3-0 score to first-place Trinity University on Sunday.

Southwestern opened the scoring on a stellar play that started with Kate Nguyen won possession of the ball just inside the midfield stripe and sent a pass up the left sideline to Samantha Hazen.

Hazen then dribbled the ball until she found space enough to send a pass into the box where Sydney Boswell scooted the ball past Schreiner's Audrey Rivera for an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. The goal was the first of the season for the sophomore from Santa Clarita, Calif.

Some razzle-dazzle play prior to a set piece from just outside the Schreiner 18-yard box resulted in Southwestern's second goal of the match.

A yellow card was issued to a Mountaineer player resulting in a free kick for the Pirates. Meredith Lannan and Abby Castelli ran to the right of the ball juking out the Schreiner wall and goalkeeper giving Hazen an open net to slide the ball into for her fourth goal of the season.

Southwestern outshot Schreiner (3-5-2, 2-3-2 SCAC) 8-3 in the first half and things got even worse for the Mountaineers in the second half as the Pirates held a 10-1 shot advantage for the period.

Schreiner goalkeeper Audrey Rivera was forced to make eight saves on the day to just two needed by Johnna Campbell for the Pirates.

The nail-in-the-coffin goal that all but ended any chance Schreiner had of a comeback occurred in the 63rd minute when Laren Gradt sent in a corner kick from the left corner and Lauren Powell got enough of her head on the ball to bounce it off the ground and just over the outstretched hand of Rivera. The goal was the first of Powell's collegiate career.
