The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) named Southwestern's Samantha Hazen, a freshman forward from Northbridge, Mass., the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for games played through Monday, Sept. 6.
Hazen had an auspicious collegiate debut scoring the game-winner in Southwestern's 2-1 win over Texas-Dallas in the season opener last Wednesday. She followed that up with an even better performance, converting on a penalty kick and delivering two assists in the Pirates' 4-1 win over Sul Ross State. Hazen finished the opening week of action as the SCAC leader in points (six) and is tied for the lead in goals (two) and assists (two).
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman forward Taylor Merritt of Schreiner scored a goal in her collegiate debut for the Mountaineers and finished with two total shots on the week. First-year midfielder Michaela Bosco of Trinity tallied three points in her collegiate debut. Bosco scored her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute of the McMurry match and later assisted on a goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 win over the Warhawks. Though Bosco did not score a goal in the second match of the weekend, she made her presence felt on offense with three shots. Bosco also displayed great ball movement, which created offensive opportunities for her teammates.
