Women's Soccer Overwhelms TLU in 2-0 Victory

SEGUIN, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team dominated possession of the ball in a 2-0 victory over the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Bulldogs.

Alexis Guajardo and Alexis Barrientez found a connection beyond a shared first name when Guajardo found the back of the net on a pass from Barrientez to put the Pirates on the board a little more than 13 minutes into the match.

It was Guajardo's seventh goal of the season, leading the Pirates in scoring with 16 points as a first year forward. The assist was Barrientez's first of the season.

Southwestern overwhelmed Texas Lutheran University in the first half, recording 13 shots to the Bulldogs' one and producing a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Texas Lutheran Madison Stout kept the Bulldogs within striking distance with six first-half saves.

The trends continued in the second half with the Pirates gaining a 12-1 advantage in shots, finishing with 25 for the match, and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Once again, Stout held up with four saves to finish with 10. On the other end of the pitch, Southwestern goalkeeper Mary Cardone went largely untested, stopping the lone shot sent at her.

The Pirates added an insurance goal 74 minutes in, pinging the ball quickly between Hallie Rutherford and Juliet Pridgen to Maya Fuller, who scored her fourth goal of the season.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 12-4-0 on the season, including 4-2-0 in conference play, sitting third in the SCAC standings. Texas Lutheran drops to 7-7-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in conference play. Southwestern will step away from conference play for a match against Concordia Texas on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Southwestern will close out its regular season conference schedule on Friday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 3 against St. Thomas and Centenary. The Pirates host the SCAC Championship from Nov. 8-10.
