Reyna Scores Winning Goal Over St. Thomas

Reyna Scores Winning Goal Over St. Thomas
GEORGETOWN, Texas -  The Pirates took a 1-0  win over the St. Thomas Celts after senior defender Romie Reyna scored on a hard left shot on goal.

The score came as a result of a of a foul before an uncounted goal made by Whitney Whitehill.

In the beginning of the first half, the Southwestern University Pirates were aggressive on the offense but could not seeming to find the back of the net. After taking six shots at the goal while St. Thomas was only able to get one shot at Southwestern goalie Mary Cardone, it appeared that Southwestern scored the first goal after a hard up-field pass from Sam Davis to Whitehill, who shot the ball past the goalie while going down from a tough St. Thomas defense.

After review, the goal was not counted because a yellow card had been called on the Celts player who took down Whitehill before the shot. Reyna, the go-to player for foul shots, stepped up to redeem Whitehill's uncounted shot. She put the ball into the back of the net over three front men standing defenders and a box full of Celt defenders.

With the game at 1-0 before the half, the Pirates were able to hold the Celts from scoring any goals for the rest of the game. Even in a fast break from St. Thomas's Kennedy Sessions, Cardone made a huge save to keep the score 1-0, helping the Pirates win their second game of the season.

Up next, the Pirates will play at home again on Varsity Field and take on the  East Texas Baptist Tigers Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
