Pirates Make it Two in a Row with Win Over Centenary

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's soccer team earn their second consecutive 1-0 win, defeating the Centenary Ladies on a 52nd minute goal from senior Malorie Lara on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Ladies held the shot advantage, 20-7, including a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. But the Pirates had the advantage on what matters most, the scoreboard, as an aggressive second half attack pushed the Pirates ahead.

In the first half, Centenary seemed like they were the team in control, out shooting Southwestern 11-2. However, senior Kylie Hunt made six saves in the half to keep the match scoreless going into the break.

The two teams both came out aggressive in the second half as Southwestern set up a corner kick. Senior Mady Akers sent a short corner just outside the box where Lara hit a lovely strike to the near side post for the lead.

From there, the Southwestern defense stepped up and defended well throughout the rest of the second half thanks to the likes of Akers, sophomore Mallory Harkins, and freshman Alli Moff. Sophomore Mary Cardone added three saves as the Pirates held on for the 1-0 win. Sophomore Romie Reyna led the attack with two shots in the game.

Southwestern moves to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the SCAC. They will hit the road on Friday as they head to Kerrville for a 1 PM matchup against Schreiner.
