Women’s soccer snags first win in double overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Ana Gutierrez made her first collegiate goal a memorable one, scoring the game winner in double overtime to hand Southwestern their first win of the season.

Austin College controlled most of the first half and seemed to have the game in hand, but SU's Sara Bevins, assisted by Carol Bentley, gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead less than three minutes before halftime.

The confidence served the Pirates well in the opening moments of the second half, but AC tied the game in the 60th minute with a goal from Tori Strunk as she scored from 40 yards out.

Neither team was able to score the game winner in regulation and the game rolled into the first overtime. Austin College controlled the first overtime, getting off four shots in the ten minutes while keeping Southwestern without one. SU's defensive line held strong, however, and forced the 'Roos into bad looks to keep the game tied and force a second overtime.

Just moments before the final overtime was complete, Gutierrez made her mark as she scored on a lofty corner kick that curved perfectly into the upper left corner to hand the Pirates the win.

Southwestern trailed 21-8 in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks, but Katherine Rodgers secured four saves in the win.

Now 1-7-1 on the year and 1-1-0 in the SCAC, the Pirates return home and remain in SCAC play as they face Texas Lutheran University on Friday at 8 p.m.
