Women's soccer opens SCAC action with victory

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern women's soccer team opened SCAC conference action on Saturday afternoon, defeating Schreiner 1-0.

Southwestern came out with an attacking mind and quickly tested the Mountaineers defense with two early corners and two shots on goal. It took just nine minutes for the Pirates to see their work pay-off as Kylie O'Connor won the ball from Schreiner and fed it through the middle to Sarah Bevins. Bevins needed just one touch to beat Schreiner's defense and one more to place it in the back of the net, giving SU a 1-0 lead early.

Hailey Miesse was just inches from making it a 2-0 lead as her shot from nearly 30 yards out was placed perfectly under the crossbar, but Schreiner's Paige Homer got just enough of her fingertips on it to misdirect it off the crossbar.

The half came to a close with Southwestern retaining a slim 1-0 lead despite taking 12 shots and holding the Mountaineers to just one.

With a refreshed lineup to open the second half the Pirates were all over Schreiner with shots surrounding the goal, but were unable to extend their lead. Ashley Moulder had two breakaway goal scoring opportunities but Homer had great diving saves to keep the game at 1-0.

Schreiner had few goal scoring opportunities but their best came in the 66th minute as Kelcie Nesbitt broke free from SU's defensive line inside the 18, but Maria Escajeda made a brilliant diving save to keep the lead for Southwestern.

The game came to a close with the Pirates holding on to the 1-0 lead. Southwestern led 23-4 in shots and 9-2 in corner kicks.

With the win SU moves to 2-5 on the year and 1-0 in the SCAC while Schreiner remains winless at 0-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Southwestern remains at home in SCAC action on Sunday, facing Texas Lutheran at noon.
