DeAnna Hames Breaks Women’s Lacrosse Career Goal Record

DeAnna Hames Breaks Women’s Lacrosse Career Goal Record

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Pirates traveled to Spokane, Washington, this weekend to battle the Whitworth University Pirates and the Whitman College Blues. The Pirates won convincingly over Whitworth, proving to be the better of the two Pirate programs. Whitman put up a fight against Southwestern in a high-scoring affair, but the Pirates came out on top, 17-15.

The weekend's highlight was senior midfielder DeAnna Hames, who broke the women's lacrosse career goals record. The record was previously held by Raven Garcia, who set the record last year with 122 goals. Hames came into the season ranked third on the all-time list with 107 goals but wasted no time making her way to the top. Hames has scored five or more goals in the Pirates' four games this season and went for six goals against Whitman to break the record. Hames still sits at third on the all-time points list with 169.

Whitworth came out fighting and each Pirate team scored four goals in the first quarter. The Pirates turned the ball over eight times in the first, giving Whitworth scoring opportunities and started off fast at the draw, winning six draw controls.

The Pirates reigned in the turnovers and dominated draw controls the rest of the way. After the first quarter, the Pirate defense only allowed two more goals the rest of the contest thanks to four caused turnovers and four ground balls from Kate Vlasek. Emma Pertuit led both teams in draw controls with ten, securing valuable possessions the Pirates could cash in on. DeAnna Hames steadied the Pirates in points (5G, 3A), followed by Sierra Rupp (3G, 2A) and Pertuit (2G, 3A).

Southwestern would go on to win 17-6, defeating Whitworth on their home turf.

Whitman went goal for goal against the Pirates all the way to the finish. Hames six goals kept Southwestern in the game, boosted by hat tricks from Liana Collins and Pertuit. The two-goal lead the Pirates held in the first quarter proved to be the margin of victory, as the Pirates' goal differential in the next three quarters would remain even with Whitman.

Twenty-four caused turnovers for the Pirates against the Blues sixteen gave Southwestern plenty of time on offense to score goals,s and Pertuit yet again went for double-digits on the draw control with thirteen. Southwestern cleared at 84 percent with forty-five ground balls on the way to securing a 17-15 over the Blues.

The Pirates return to Georgetown for a five-game home stand in the month of March, with the first game coming on March 2nd against Hanover College at 7:00 PM.
