ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team defeated Augustana College 13-9 in their second road game of the season early this Sunday afternoon.

Augustana was the first to score a goal, however, this was the only lead the Vikings had for the rest of the game. Southwestern scored four back-to-back goals, with Deanna Hames making two goals and Raven Garcia and Raquel Kurth each scoring one goal.  Southwestern took a total of 19 shots at the Viking goal in the first half, but Augustana was able to make one more goal at the end of the first half, making the game 4-2.

In the second half, Augustana battled Southwestern offensively to try and take the lead in the game. For every goal Southwestern scored, Augustana answered back, keeping the score very close. At several points during the second half, the Vikings were only down one goal from tying the game with the Pirates. This went on until the last three minutes of the game. While Augustana was able to score a ninth goal to bring them just one point behind Southwestern, Natasha Perez-Krause and Liana Collins scored two back-to-back goals to gain a three-point lead. Southwestern managed to prevent the Vikings from scoring any last-minute goals and with 32 seconds left in the game, Perez-Krause made the final goal to end the game 13-9 with a Pirate victory.

Highlights from the game included Perez-Krause scoring the most goals, tacking on four goals, one groundball and one draw control. Collins scored three goals while Hames and Emma Pertuit scored two goals each. Goalie Sofia Valdespino stopped eight Viking shots and picked up six groundballs.

The Pirates now improve to 3-1 in the season. Next, Southwestern women's lacrosse will travel to River Falls, Wis., to take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons on Saturday, March 27 at noon.
