GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team came back after a tough loss to win 22-10 against the Midland Warriors Friday evening on Varsity Field.

In the first few minutes of the game, Deanna Hames scored the first goal off of a fast pass from Liana Collins, giving the Pirates the lead in the game. Midland bounced back to answer Hames's goal to make the game 1-1, but this would be the last time the Warriors would ever come close to tying the game or attempting a lead over the Pirates.

Emma Pertuit was the next Pirate to score a goal off of a free position shot and Brynne Hardway would score the next goal, assisted by Hames.

Hames then scored two more back-to-back goals, followed by a goal by Hardway to give the Pirates a 6-2 lead. Midland scored two more goals to make the score closer, but Raven Garcia scored the next three goals for the Pirates, two off of free position shots and then one assisted by Natasha Perez-Krause.

With 12 minutes left in the first half, the Pirates held the Warriors to scoring only three goals while the Pirates scored seven more goals, three made by Brooke Folliard, to end the half with the Pirates leading 16-7.

In the second half, the Pirates started strong with Garcia and Perez-Krause's two goals, helping set the momentum for the Pirates to feel comfortable with a ten-goal lead. This substantial lead gave the Pirates more time to slow down the game and take their time setting up the offense. In the end, the Pirate defense kept the Warrior offense from only scoring only three goals, and the Pirates scored three more goals to end the game 22-10.

Highlights from the game included Southwestern dominating draw controls possessions by winning 24 while Midland won seven. Pertuit won 22 of the draw controls and picked up 14 ground balls, the most of the team. Garcia scored the most goals earning a total of seven goals and two assists. Hame scored four goals, took 13 ground balls and had one assist. Folliard also scored four goals.

Southwestern is now 1-1 in the season and will get ready to host Piedmont College next Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. on Varsity Field.
