Women’s Lacrosse Hits Six Game Win-Streak Beating Hanover and Franklin

The Southwestern Women's Lacrosse Team extended their win streak to six games in a row after their wins against the Hanover College Panthers and the Franklin College Grizzlies. The Pirates' played back-to-back games on April 1st and 2nd and secured decisive wins against both their opponents. 

Five of the Pirates six wins have been by a margin of five goals or more and no team has been able to score in the double digits during their streak, proving that Pirates are as good offensively as they are defensively. 

In the win against Hanover Panthers, the Pirates scored five goals to start off the game and limited the Panthers to only one goal in every quarter but the fourth. Even in the fourth, the Panthers only managed two goals. The Pirates had five different goal scorers in the first to take the lead at 5-1. Things slowed down for the offense in the second quarter, with only two goals being scored from the Pirates and the half ending with a Southwestern lead of 7-2.  

Jr. Brynne Hardway led off the scoring in the second half followed by Sr. Natasha Perez-Krause and Jr. Deanna Hames for a three goal third quarter. The Pirates ratcheted up the pace in the fourth period of play scoring six goals, sealing the deal for the Pirates and a 16-5 victory. Hames had four goals and one assist against the Panthers, Sr. Raven Garcia had a hat trick in the game as well as dishing out three assists. Jr. Emma Pertuit and Perez-Krause ended with two goals. Other notable perfomances include Jr. defender Skye George and goaltender Sofia Valdespino who each had four ground balls contributing signifantly to the Pirates 25 GBs for the game.

For their game against the Franklin College Grizzlies, the Pirates showed no mercy, racking up twenty goals and limiting the Grizzlies to a mere three. The Pirates scored five goals or more in all but the third quarter. Southwestern had ten different goal scorers against the Grizzlies as everyone was getting their chances at the cage. The top scorer of the day was So. Raquel Kurth, who had a career best five goals, adding three assists for another career high of eight total points. Pertuit would be second in line in scoring with three goals for the game and one assits for four points total. Hames also set a personal record with six assists in the game. Pertuit and Fr. Kate Vlasek were ground ball machines, each scooping up six GBs and securing possessions for their teams. The Pirates overwhelmed the Grizzlies by a margin of 20-3 making quick work in a match that only took an hour and a half. 

Over the course of two games, the Pirates had 36 draw controls, 82 shots, 36 goals and only 8 goals allowed. The Pirates scored on 44 percent of their shots while the goaltenders for the Pirates performed outstanding for a 65.7 percent save percentage. Ten Pirates had goals and eleven Pirates had points out of the 17 women on the roster. The Pirates are on a roll, already having made history so far this season and easily securing double digit wins

Women's lacrosse will attempt to go undefeated at Varsity Field and has their final home game of the season against the University of Dallas on Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 PM.
