The Pirates' will drop to 5-1 after a loss to the Whittier College Poets. Women's lacrosse went on the road to California for their spring break to play three games; their second match-up against the Poets proved to be much more challenging than their previous game against the Cal-Lutheran Regals.
Goaltender Sofia Valdespino got the start for the Pirates and was put under stress by the Poets early on. The Poets shot the ball efficiently in the first quarter, scoring five goals on nine shots. The Pirates offense scored three goals, minimizing the damage and making it 5-3 at the end of the first.
The Poets took the pressure to another level in the second quarter, scoring another six goals on 12 shots. Turnovers and yellow cards from the Pirates gave the Poets many more opportunities to score, and they took full advantage. The Pirates wouldn't have a goal until the very last second of the half when midfielder Sierra Rupp put the ball in the back of the net. The half would end with the Pirates down 11-4.
The Pirates fought back in the second half, but the six-goal second quarter would be too much to overcome. Raquel Kurth had two goals and an assist in the second half with Emma Pertuit and Kate Vlasek having two goals as well. The Poets' defense reduced the impact that Raven Garcia and Deanna Hames usually have on games as they were both limited to only one goal each. Overall, the Pirates will look to put this one behind them and move on to the next one.
In their last game in California, the Pirates will meet the Pacific University Boxers in a neutral site game hosted by Cal-Lutheran, Saturday, March 19th at 10:00 AM PST.
