GEORGETOWN, Texas -- In their first time meeting on the field, the Southwestern's University women's lacrosse team hustled and stayed solid through a physical game to pull through the 19-17 win over the Carthage College Lady Reds.

Grace Maynard lead the team with five goals, with three of her scores swiftly made off of free position shots. Maynard also contributed two assists, two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Emma Pertuit, Raven Garcia and Deanna Hames put up four goals each, blowing past the Lady Reds physical defense and finishing each shot with the ball flying through the net. Haley Hurt also scored a crucial goal at the end of the game that helped secure the Pirates a two-point lead at the very end of the game.

In the first half of the game, Carthage seemed to match Southwestern intensity both offensively and defensively. As soon as the Pirates scored, the Lady Reds were quick to answer back, so the biggest lead the Pirates held in the first half was two points. Carthage won more of the ball control possessions and took more shots at Southwestern goalie Sofia Valdespino, but with Carthage also leading the Pirates in fouls and giving up free position shots, the Pirates were able to go into halftime with a one-point lead

Going into the second half the Pirates had the upper hand, scoring five goals within the first 12 minutes while Carthage could only score two, making the score 12-9 with 18 minutes left in the game. However, Jessie Gibson and Elizabeth Oda from Carthage dominated the six ball controls, which lead to the Lady Reds scoring six back to back goals and putting a hold on the Pirates offense. In those five minutes of Carthage offensive domination, the Lady Read's went up 14-12.

As the Pirates seemed to lose momentum, Pertuit received a wide-open pass from Maynard to end the Southwestern scoreless streak, and the Pirates were in a one-point game. With four minutes left in the game the score was tied 16-16. Hames, who had been receiving hits for most, took a free position shot after being fouled. Hurt and Maynard followed up with two more goals for the Pirates, giving them the momentum they needed to win the game.

The Pirates now improve 4-2 in the season and will get ready for a quick turn around and play Wittenberg University tomorrow on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. on Varsity Field.
