MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team could not break through the Rhodes College Lynx defense Sunday, leading to a final score of 20-3.

In the first half, the Lynx offense had no problems penetrating the Pirates defense and scoring three goals within the first five minutes of the game. Southwestern offense made several attempts to get the ball into Lynx territory, however, with turnover after turnover, the Pirates lost any opportunities to make goals. With only two shots attempts at the Lynx goal in the whole first half, the Lynx shut out the Pirates 0-14 in the first half.

Once again going into the second half the Pirates were plagued with turnovers within the first ten minutes of the game. It wasn't until Grace Maynard took a shot at the Lynx goal after a shot attempt by Haley Hurt and scored the first Pirate goal of the game that the scoreless streak was broken. After Maynard scored for the Pirates, Raven Garcia scored off of an assist from Hurt and then Emma Pertuit scored from a free position. Unfortunately, with the goals coming so late in the game, Rhodes took the victory over the Pirates in their last road game of the weekend.

Pertuit, Jillie Klumbach, Natasha Perez-Krause and Ally Bienvenu put up three grounds balls each while Sofia Valdespino had six saves for the Pirates and Tessa Lewis contributed two saves.

Up next, the Pirates will host their first home game on Varsity Field on Monday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. against Elmira College.
