GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - In the last meet before the Pirates compete at the SCAC Championships, the senior class of the Southwestern Women's Swim and Dive team got to end their career on a win in their home pool. There was a sizeable crowd on hand to watch the Pirates compete in Walzel Natatorium this Saturday, and the fans were treated to an exciting and competitive meet against the University of Texas - Permian Basin (UTPB).
The team of Elise Samples, Annie LeBlanc, Zoe Garcia, and Emma Williams kicked off the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, ending with a final time of 4:12.44. Meanwhile, the team of Emma Frey, Saylor McWhorter, Ella Harmon, and Delaney Anthony came three seconds behind their teammates for second place (4:15.51).
Garcia gained a solo win, this time in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 2:03.94 and beating out her UTPB opponent by just .8 seconds. LeBlanc, a first-year at Southwestern, gained another win for the Pirates in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in a 1:15.03. Junior Jessica Karli followed up LeBlanc with a win of her own in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.62), with her teammate, Harmon, following behind her (2:26.89)
Following Harmon, Samples would make it three event wins in a row for the Pirates in the closest a race could possibly be. Samples won the 50-yard freestyle by .01 second over UTPB. Samples clocked in at 25.84 and her competitor with 25.85. A much needed five point swing for the Pirates.
Samples won yet again by a close margin after taking a break for the dive events, but this time it was over her teammate. Samples would take first place in the 100-yard freestyle (54.83), with Frey just .19 seconds behind her (55.02). Junior Maysen Hauk secured the fifth win in a row for Southwestern as she and senior Riley Barlage took first and second place in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 2:19.93 and 2:20.08, respectively. The Pirate's win streak was broken in the 500-yard freestyle, but LeBlanc put the Pirates back on track, taking first place in the 200-yard IM (2:20.09) by a two-second margin.
To cap off a day where the Pirates essentially dominated the swim events in the pool, the team of Williams, Garcia, Samples, and Frey won the final event of the day in the 200-yard freestyle relay, ending the meet with a 1:40.91 and finishing off a successful senior day in Walzel Natatorium.
The SCAC Championships lie ahead for Southwestern Women's Swimming and Diving. The Pirates will have two and a half weeks to prepare with the event taking place in Garland, Texas, from February 8th -11th.
