Southwestern Pounds Colorado College to Open SCAC Play with a Win

A big night from senior Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) helped lead the SU men's basketball team to a 65-44 victory over the Colorado College Tigers on the first night of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Nov. 30).

CC scored the first four points of the game but the Pirates came back to take a 9-5 lead at the 12:11 mark thanks to a three-pointer from sophomore Zach Bergstrom (La Vernia, TX/La Vernia HS). SU built its largest lead of the half to 10 with 33 seconds left on the clock on a layup by first-year Jonathan Brown (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) and took a 31-23 lead in to the locker room.

Southwestern really got it going in the second half. The Pirates were up 48-37 with 7:43 left in the game and then went on a 17-0 run over the next six minutes for a 28 point lead. SU then cruised to the 21 point victory to open conference play with a 1-0 record.

Caplan posted a double-double in the win, recording 21 points and 12 rebounds. He was 8-14 from the field and 5-9 from three-point range while grabbing two steals, posting one block and one assist.

Bergstrom finished with 10 points on 3-8 shooting and dished out a team-high three assists. Junior Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) had a solid game, scoring nine along with six rebounds, two blocks and two assists.

The victory marks the first time since the 2004-05 season the Pirates have won their conference opener. SU is now 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in the conference while Colorado College remains winless and 0-6 and 0-1.

Southwestern hosts the Austin College Kangaroos on Saturday (Dec. 1) night in Georgetown with game time set for 8:00 pm.
