Men's Basketball Swept By Schreiner

Men's Basketball Swept By Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas — Southwestern men's basketball closed the weekend with two losses in a home-and-away back-to-back series against Schreiner, losing 77-70 to the Mountaineers.

Southwestern shook off its shooting woes from the previous night, led by Chris Smith, Jr.'s 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. The Pirates also connected on 36 percent of its 3-point attempts, shooting 9-for-25 from distance.

The improved offensive play wasn't enough to overcome a staggering disparity at the free-throw line, where Schreiner's 42 attempts tied for the 18th most taken by a team in Division III play this season. The Mountaineers converted on 30 free-throw attempts, outscoring Southwestern 30-17 at the charity stripe.

Schreiner forward Kamden Ross did most of the damage inside, scoring 21 points on 5-for-8 shooting to lead a balanced attack in which four Mountaineer starters scored in double figures. Ross shot 11-for-15 from the free-throw line and pulled down 12 rebounds, joining Darian Gibson as one of two Schreiner players to finish with double-doubles. Gibson had 10 points on nine shots and 10 rebounds.

The Mountaineers struggled from outside, connecting on 5-for-28 from deep, but outrebounded Southwestern 46-36 for a 17-3 advantage in second-chance points. Schreiner also outscored Southwestern 32-18 in the paint.

Kyle Poerschke added 14 points for Southwestern. Brock Luechtefeld, Hudson Boyd, and Leo Toussaint each scored eight. Alex Dehoyos had 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for Schreiner. Jackson Reid added 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers.

Southwestern drops to 4-8 with the loss, including 1-2 in conference play. The Pirates will travel next week to face Centenary on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
