GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern men's basketball had a tough task ahead of them on Friday night when they faced the Centenary College Gents at the Gold Dome in Shreveport, Louisiana. Centenary currently sits third in the SCAC conference standings with a 7-4 conference record, while the Pirates are in eighth place in the conference.
The Gents came out firing on all cylinders, with each of their five starters in the lineup scoring points, three out of the five of which scored over five points. The Gents shot 38 percent from the field in the first half while going a perfect 11-11 at the free-throw line.
The Pirates did all they could to limit the damage from the Gents. Luke Hatcher and Brock Luechtefeld combined for fourteen points in the first half, and the Pirates shot a collective 33.3 percent from the field. But the Pirates couldn't get to the free throw line like the Gents, only manufacturing four free throws in the first half, leading to a halftime score of 24-33 in favor of the Gents.
The second half was all Gents, who went 61 percent from the field in the second half combining for a game average of almost 50 percent from the field and 33 percent of their three-pointers made. Chris Smith Jr. put together ten points in the second half while Nick Crump scored eight himself, however, Centenary kept building on the nine-point halftime lead. Centenary outscored the Pirates by a 38-28 margin in the second half, never looking back and marching to a 71-52 win over Southwestern.
