Men's Basketball Falls In Double Overtime

Men's Basketball Falls In Double Overtime

ABILENE, Texas — For the second night in a row, Southwestern men's basketball played a game down to the wire, with Jacob Hester hitting a layup with one second remaining. Tonight, the final shot wasn't enough to put the Pirates over the top in an 88-85 loss to the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys in double overtime.

Kyle Poerschke led Southwestern with his second double-double of the season, scoring 16 of his team-high 20 points after halftime to help erase a 31-26 deficit at the break while grabbing 15 rebounds. Poerschke shot 9-for-19 from the field and also contributed three blocks and assists.

All five starters scored in double figures for Southwestern. Hester scored 17 points on 13 shots, hitting 4-for-7 from deep. Center Brock Luechtefeld reached double figures for the third time in four games to start his collegiate career, scoring 16 points on 11 shots with eight rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. Josh Jones scored 12 points, and Chris Smith, Jr. added 11 points and eight assists.

Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field, with Southwestern finishing slightly better at 38.1 percent to Hardin-Simmons' 34.2 percent. However, Southwestern couldn't keep Hardin-Simmons off the free-throw line, sending the Cowboys to the charity stripe for 35 attempts, of which they hit 29.

Forward Steven Quinn was the primary beneficiary of Southwestern's fouls, scoring 30 points with 19 coming from the free-throw line off 20 attempts. Kyle Brennon added 17 off the bench for the Cowboys.

Southwestern drops to 1-3 with the loss. In a rematch of the season opener, the Pirates will travel to face Howard Payne on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
