Southwestern Men's Basketball Turns Tables On Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas — The Southwestern men's basketball team turned the tables on the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, avenging a previous loss with a blistering second-half performance for a 70-63 victory. 

Kyle Poerschke led Southwestern with 25 points and eight rebounds, and the Pirates shot 25-for-50 from the field, including 5-of-11 from behind the 3-point line, while limiting Texas Lutheran to 22-for-59 (37.3 percent) shooting. 

Southwestern fell into a double-digit deficit less than 10 minutes into the first half, surrendering an early 14-3 run. Texas Lutheran guard Riley Fornerette led the scoring barrage with a pair of 3-pointers, and the Bulldogs scored half the points off Southwestern turnovers. 

Poerschke kept Southwestern within striking distance, scoring 12 points on seven shots in the half, while Preston Hannah added eight of his 13 points to keep Southwestern within 38-31 at the break. 

Zac Black and Hannah sparked Southwestern in the second half, alternating baskets to score the first four baskets for the Pirates as part of a 9-3 run. Poerschke put the Pirates up with a fastbreak layup at 42-41 with 15:31 remaining. 

The Southwestern defense locked in the rest of the way, limiting Texas Lutheran to 9-for-29 shooting without a single made 3-pointer in the second half. 

Josh Jones scored nine points with four rebounds and three assists for the Pirates, and Black added eight points on five shots with two steals and a block. 

Sebastian Andrade led Texas Lutheran with 20 points on 21 shots. Fornerette added 12 off the bench as the only other Bulldog in double figures. 

Southwestern improves to 6-11 with a 3-5 conference record. The Pirates will travel to play Austin College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
