Jan. 19, 2008

Box Score

Sophomore Zach Bergstrom (La Vernia, TX/La Vernia HS) and senior Goran Stojcic (Houston, TX/Stratford HS) both scored in double-digits to help lead the Southwestern University men's basketball team to a 55-53 victory, its first in six games, over Birmingham-Southern College on Friday (Jan. 18) night in Georgetown, TX.

The score stayed close for the first 12 minutes of the game before SU went on a 10-0 run to lead 18-8 with 5:57 remaining in the first half. The Panthers fought back, however, and a jumper from Aaron Parr just before the buzzer put BSC ahead 27-26.

In the second half, the Pirates regained the lead with 13:53 on the clock and built their lead up to seven. BSC came back and led briefly when a three-pointer put them up by one, but sophomore Travis Barber (Houston, TX/Klein HS) answered with a three of his own to put Southwestern ahead for good. The Pirates saw an eight point lead with 2:13 left dwindle to a two point lead with 27 seconds remaining. Senior Ben Schleif (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) hit both of his free throws with nine seconds on the clock to make it a four point ballgame. BSC's Daniel Hudson hit a jumper with five seconds left to pull within two, but the Panthers would not get another shot off.

Stojcic scored 13 and tight for the team-high with seven rebounds. Bergstrom was 4-6 from the field, 3-5 from three-point range, and a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line while senior Matt Caplan also pulled down seven rebounds.

The Pirates improve to 6-8 overall and remain at 2-3 in the conference while the Panthers drop to 8-6 for the year.

SU will host Rhodes on Saturday (Jan. 19) night at 8:00 pm for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
