Pirates Fall to 2-2 in SCAC with Loss at Hendrix

The Southwestern Pirates men's basketball team fell to .500 in conference play as SU was defeated at Hendrix College in Conway, Ar by a score of 72-60 on Sunday (Jan. 6) afternoon.

Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) and Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) combined for 26 points off the bench for the Pirates but that was not enough to push SU to victory. Southwestern stayed within five points of the home team for most of the half, gaining the lead a few times and ultimately going in to the half tied 29-29.

Caplan drained a three-pointer with 6:01 left in the game to give the Pirates a two-point lead. However, less than 3:30 later, Hendrix had jumped ahead by 10. The game ended with the Pirates trailing 72-60.

With 16 points, Caplan led SU in scoring on 6-11 shooting and he was 4-9 from three-point range. Powell scored 10 points and had a team-high five assists and three steals.

Sophomore Travis Barber (Houston, TX/Klein HS) had a career-high nine rebounds to go along with five points. As a team, SU shot 38.3 percent (23-60) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) froom three-point range and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the free throw line.

The Pirates were out-rebounded by a 38-26 margin. SU held a favorable margin in turnovers, forcing 20 while only committing 15.

The loss was the fourth in a row for Southwestern, dropping the team's record to 5-7 and 2-2 in the conference. The Warriors move to 7-4 and 1-2 in the SCAC.

SU's next game will be on Saturday (Jan. 12) as they take on Trinity University in San Antonio, TX at 5:00 pm.
