SOFTBALL SPLITS BACK END OF SERIES WITH AUSTIN COLLEGE

SHERMAN, Texas. - The Southwestern softball team split the back end of the four game series with Austin College on Sunday dropping game one 3-2 and winning game two 8-2. The Pirates are now in first place in the conference with a 15-13 overall record and 6-2 record in the SCAC.

Both teams did all of their scoring in the third inning of game one, with Southwestern getting on the board in the top half of the inning with a pair of RBI singles from Kenna Dies and Katelyn Gola to grab a 2-0 lead. The 'Roos would respond in the bottom half of the inning with Suzanne Beltran singling to score Stefanie Faith and Sam Smith following that up with a two run double to take the lead for good.

Katelyn Pavlicek took the loss for Southwestern, giving up three runs on six hits. Five Pirates had one hit in the game with no one posting a multi-hit game.

In game two the 'Roos grabbed a 2-0 lead when Kali Gossett scored in the first and Carolyn Stone came home in the second inning, but Southwestern put together a five run inning in the top of the fourth to surge ahead 5-2. SU added one more run in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead that the 'Roos would be unable to make up.

Lyndsy Maus got the win for Southwestern while Kat Hoover and Taylor Turpin each had a pair of hits for the Pirates.

Southwestern returns home for a four game series with Trinity to retain first place in the conference. Game one on Friday will begin at 1:00 pm with the second game to follow.
