Softball Drops Game 1 of SCAC Tournament

KERRVILLE, Texas — Southwestern first-year Taylor McKenzie produced another strong pitching performance, but the Pirates struggled to provide run support in a 2-1 loss to the Schreiner Mountaineers to open the SCAC Tournament.

McKenzie struck out four of the first six hitters she faced, retiring the Mountaineers in order through the first two innings on her way to 10 strikeouts with no walks in 5.1 innings, surrendering two runs and four hits.

The Mountaineers broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double by Kennedy Moody, followed by a Bri Wodtke RBI triple for the first run of the game.

McKenzie hit Malorie Solis with a pitch to start the fifth inning, then Melanie Castilla followed with a sacrifice bunt to move her to second, ending McKenzie's first stint. Paige Rasmussen stepped into the pitcher circle for Southwestern and induced a groundout to third that advanced Solis to third. Danielle Pedraza followed with an RBI single to left field for Schreiner's second run.

Rasmussen walked two to start the sixth inning and was replaced by McKenzie, who escaped unscathed, striking out two and inducing a groundout.

Kathryn Dull pinch-hit for Samantha Saenz with two outs in the top of the seventh, delivered a single up the middle, and was then replaced by pinch-runner Rylee Rudloff. Sav Frieze followed with a shot to left-center, scoring Rudloff, but Meghan McCarthy lined out to second to end the game.

Jodi Millhouse, Jessey Nunez, Dull, and Frieze accounted for Southwestern's four hits.

Southwestern's record drops to 14-25. The Pirates will play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
