Softball Wins Both Games In Doubleheader Against Trinity

SAN ANTONIO — Southwestern softball got sterling performances from pitchers Taylor McKenzie and Madison Vela and a combined 20 hits to defeat the Trinity Tigers in both games of today's doubleheader.

Game 1: Southwestern 9, Trinity 0

Eight different Pirates recorded a base hit highlighted by freshman Erica Otto's 3-for-3 performance, driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs in Southwestern's 9-0 victory in five innings.

Southwestern scored five runs in the third inning, capped off by a Kathryn Dull grand slam home run. The Pirates scored again on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and another three runs in the fifth, capped off by Otto's two-RBI double.

McKenzie pitched all five innings, holding Trinity scoreless on five hits and one walk.

Game 2: Southwestern 4, Trinity 0

Madison Vela threw a complete-game shutout in the pitcher's circle for Southwestern's 4-0 victory over Trinity to sweep the day's doubleheader.

Vela went all seven innings, limiting the Tigers to four hits and three walks.

Both teams went scoreless until Southwestern scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Pirates loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, setting up Maddie Mefford's two-RBI double to center field to score Jessey Nunez and Alex Fletes. After Jodi Millhouse grounded into a fielder's choice, Sav Frieze hit an RBI single up the middle for the 3-0 lead.

The Pirates added another run in the top of the seventh. Otto led the inning off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a Mefford groundout. Then, Millhouse singled up the middle, and Frieze walked to load the bases. Dull capitalized with an RBI single through the middle.

Vela walked one Tiger to start the seventh, then ended the game on two fielder's choices and a line out to left-center.

After the two wins, Southwestern improves to 7-13 with a 3-4 conference record. Southwestern will finish its three-game series with Trinity tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
