Softball Eliminated By St. Thomas

IRVING, Texas — The Southwestern softball team was eliminated from the SCAC Tournament with a 4-2 loss to the University of St. Thomas Celts.

Past and present squared off in the pitcher's circle with SCAC Newcomer of the Year Taylor McKenzie getting a second consecutive start for Southwestern, facing former Pirate Lindsey Longuet, who graduated from Southwestern and is competing as a graduate student at St. Thomas.

McKenzie was solid with five strikeouts but walked four batters and surrendered four hits for four runs, three of which were earned in 4.1 innings. Longuet threw 5.0 innings, surrendering eight hits, but the Pirates could not string enough together, scoring only two runs in the loss.

Maddie Mefford put Southwestern on the scoreboard first, delivering a two-out, solo blast off her former teammates in the top of the first inning. Jaelyn Simmons avenged Longuet with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

St. Thomas took the lead in the bottom of the third with an Addison Lehew sacrifice fly, scoring Simmons, who opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an error, scoring the unearned run.

Lehew struck again in the bottom of the fifth, delivering a two-RBI double to give St. Thomas the 4-1 lead.

Jessey Nunez opened the top of the sixth inning with a single down the left-field line; then Sav Frieze walked to end Longuet's afternoon. Vasquez took over in the pitcher's circle, getting Samantha Saenz to fly out. Paige Shuck pinch hit for Meghan McCarthy, coming through with a single to load the bases. Then, Alex Fletes drew a walk to score Nunez.

Mefford, Sam Martinez, and Nunez combined to hit 5-for-10 with an RBI and two runs scored from the 3-4-5 spots in the lineup.

Southwestern ends the season with a 14-26 record, including 9-12 in conference play.
